New reports to help deliver viable local plans

Local plans, as required under the new planning framework, should be realistic and viable and deliver developments that reflect the aspirations of local communities.<br> <br> That is the finding of one of two reports published last month by the Local Housing Delivery Group which was established last year to address the current chronic housing crisis. The second report reviews local standards for the delivery of new homes.<br> <br> The viability report is designed to be a practical resource for local authorities and planners with step by step advice on how local plans can address viability criteria.<br> <br> Sir John Harman, chairman of the group, stressed that local authorities need to strike a balance between achieving sustainable development and economic viability and should adopt a collaborative approach to devising local plans.<br> <br> The local standards report urges a rationalisation of the number of existing standards imposed on housebuilding. It recommends that a cross-sector industry group be established to take the work forward. "There is significant scope for simplification of the standards regime," said Sir John.
