Help to Buy in Wales has been extended by 18 months, as part of the Welsh government’s Draft Budget.
The equity loan scheme, introduced in 2014, will now discontinue at the end of September 2026, with £57 million of capital funding provided for 2025-26.
Help to Buy Wales would have otherwise expired in March 2025; it will now run beyond the next Senedd elections in May 2026. The scheme was last extended in December 2022.
It is expected the maximum purchase price under the initiative will remain at £300,000.
The Home Builders Fderation said it had been calling for an extension and had worked closely with the Welsh government. In September, it released a report, detailing Help to Buy Wales’ returns to the taxpayer and its wider benefits.
HBF’s analysis, which it said was shared with ministers and members of the Senedd, showed that 46% of all Help to Buy Wales loans have been repaid in full at a total value of £281.99 million, against an original value of £239.79 million.
This is a return of more than £40 million to the Welsh government and an average uplift of 18% per equity loan.
