Green light for two of UK’s largest regeneration schemes

<p>The largest brownfield site in Europe, the former Ravenscraig steelworks in Lanarkshire, south of Glasgow, is set for redevelopment following a House of Lords decision to dismiss an appeal by Land Securities against the scheme being granted town centre status. Wilson Bowden and joint venture partners Corus and Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire are now drawing up detailed plans for the 445ha (1,100acre) site, with the first phase involving the construction of 820 new homes, a multi-million pound regional sports centre and college campus. </p> <p>Construction work is due to start by the end of the year. Further south, another landmark regeneration scheme has been given the green light, following Barking and Dagenham council’s decision to approve the masterplan for Barking Riverside – a joint venture plan by Bellway and English Partnerships to develop 10,000 new homes and community facilities at Barking Reach. The 179ha site will be transformed into a new community over the next 20 years, in line with the masterplan, which divides the site into distinct neighbourhoods centred around open spaces, community facilities and shops. “This development meets our aspirations to bring lasting economic benefits and tilt the historic balance of the capital eastwards,” said Barking and Dagenham chief …
