Visitors to City &amp; Country Group’s redevelopment of the former Manor at Herringswell could well find themselves humming Turning Japanese, the classic 1980s song from the Vapors. Herringswell is outside of Newmarket in Suffolk but the century old manor has a Japanese theme that is unlikely to be found at any other development in the UK. <br><br>The estate was bought in 1905 by the Ballance family, who built the 15,500sq ft (1,400sq m) manor house. After changing hands again, the estate and surrounding farmland was bought half a century after being built by the Balance family by Robin Upton, the high sheriff of Suffolk. The Sheriff of Suffolk subsequently sold the house but retained the adjoining farm. In the 1960s, the house was converted into accommodation for the children of American servicemen stationed at military bases in the area, such as Mildenhall. <br><br>Eastern influence <br><br>The eastern influence first arrived in 1981, when the Bagwhan Shree sect from Asia bought the property before it changed hands again and the Japanese arrived in the shape of the Shi Tennoji Buddhist school.
