After eight years commissioned service in the British Army, Nick
Keable's professional life began working on international
development and economic and monetary affairs at the European
Parliament in Brussels. Nick subsequently worked for a European
public affairs consultancy and played a key role in establishing a pan-
European lobby group for the construction industry, similar to a UK
Parliamentary all-party group.
Prior to joining The Saint Consulting Group, Nick worked for a leading
UK land use lobbying firm. He rose to become Managing Director
with responsibility for the entire UK office network, managing multiple client projects. He
developed a particular specialism in both complex residential development and PFI
projects.
Nick joined Saint Consulting in 2005 to build its then recently established UK operation,
a significant step in Saint's becoming a global leader in the new management consulting
discipline of land use politics. Nick is responsible for heading up Saint's UK operation.
Saint Consulting was established in 1983 in Boston, Massachusetts as a specialist
consultancy concentrating solely on solving the politics of controversial planning
projects. Throughout our growth, the focus of our work has remained exclusively on
working for the property industry, winning well over 90% of more than 950 of our clients'
toughest engagements so far. We are the international market leader in our field with 13
offices throughout the world with the UK operation having been established for just
under three years.
His presentation, Public Opposition to Development, draws on results of the annual
Saint UK Index, a survey of public attitudes towards large-scale development. Its 2008
findings show little popular support for the Government's ambitious plan to build three
million homes by 2020, little public recognition of planning gain and strong evidence that
public consultation is not working for the planning process.
Nick is a member of the British Council of Shopping Centres and the Urban Land
Institute, sitting on its Retail and Entertainment Council. He has published many articles
on the politics of the UK planning process, has spoken at numerous conferences on the
subject and has given evidence to various inquiries including the internal inquiry into the
planning system carried out by HM Treasury. He is a regular contributor to various
property trade publications.
For four years Nick served as a councillor in an outer London borough. He sat on the
planning committee and was for some of that period a member of the shadow cabinet.
Apart from his education at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Nick has attended
programmes at Harvard Business School and at the Public Disputes Programme at
Harvard Law School.
