Director, The Planning Inspectorate

Mark Southgate is Director of Major Casework at the Planning Inspectorate. He has responsibility for the nationally significant infrastructure projects regime, local plans and major planning appeals, as well as the Inspectorate’s Environmental Services Team.  Mark has corporate responsibility for Inspector Workforce Planning and customer service.

Mark is a chartered town planner with over 30 years’ experience in local government, non-governmental organisations and central government agencies. Mark joined the Planning Inspectorate in November 2008.  Prior to joining the Inspectorate he has had a variety of planning enforcement, development management and planning policy roles at Tonbridge and Malling Council in Kent, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Environment Agency.
