Yorks requirement boosted by 14,000

<b></b>The overall housing requirement for the Yorkshire region for 1998-2016 has been increased from the 251,700 proposed by the Regional Assembly to 265,770 in new Regional Planning Guidance announced in October. This increase is worth more than &amp;£1 billion of turnover to the industry at current average house prices. <br>The draft RPG, housebuilders argued, under-provided for housing need in West Yorkshire and to a lesser extent in North Yorkshire. The examination panel recognised this and the new RPG provides for an additional 11,700 houses for West Yorkshire, to be focussed primarily on Leeds, which is being required to take 9,000 of the increase. The increase for North Yorkshire is more modest at 2,350. <p></p><p>The guidance reflects PPG3 in relation to brownfield targets (60%). This is expressed as a provisional target for each of the strategic authority areas. The highest proportion is Sheffield with a proposed 80% and the lowest Barnsley at 49%. </p><p></p>
