Water efficient new build homes can save home buyers £126 per year, reducing the country’s water usage by 3,360 Olympic-sized swimming pools, according to research from the Home Builders Federation (HBF).
As part of New Homes Week, running from Monday February 3 to Sunday February 9, HBF has launched a new guide in collaboration with Waterwise, providing practical tips for home owners on how to further reduce water consumption throughout their new build home.
New homes use around 40 fewer litres per day compared to older properties, HBF’s research shows. This is through water efficient taps, toilets and showers and “the most modern appliances”.
The average UK property consumes around 150 litres per person per day (LPPPD), with the average household (2.4 people) totalling 130,000 litres of water per year.
New homes, according to HBF, consume around 110 LPPPD, totalling 96,000 litres per year for the average household.
With the 240,000 new homes built last year, HBF said almost 8.5 billion litres of water were saved, thanks to their efficiency measures and Building Regulations.
