<table><tbody><tr><td><b>Comprehensive Spending Review</b></td><td>The Chancellor’s Comprehensive Spending Review was announced on July 13. The CSR was good news for housebuilders: an extra £200 million will be dedicated to infrastructure provision in the four Communities Plan growth areas through a Community Infrastructure Fund. Also, the site preparation budget for Milton Keynes, Stanstead, Ashford and the Thames Gateway corridor has been doubled to £130 million plus, indicating the government’s determination to meet its target of 200,000 extra homes in London and the south east by 2016. The budget for regenerating low demand areas in the north and Midlands will be trebled to over £450 million in 2007/8, and overall, a 4.1% per annum increase in spending on housing is planned, totalling £38 billion over five years.</td></tr><tr><td></td><td><b>NEXT KEY DATE:</b> Ongoing </td></tr></tbody></table><br><br><p></p><p></p><table><tbody><tr><td><b>EU Landfill Directive</b></td><td>The EU Landfill Directive (99/31) requires hazardous material removed during remediation contracts to be disposed of at specially licensed hazardous waste dumps. The directive came into force on July 16: the majority of Britain’s 240 regular landfill sites are now closed to “hazardous waste,” the definition of which includes construction rubble, computer screens, paint, asbestos and TV sets.
