Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area

<p>HBF has commissioned research to be carried out by environmental consultants which will assess the evidence base behind English Nature’s (EN) criteria for new development near the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area (SPA). The DCLG is also commissioning research which, says HBF director of external affairs John Slaughter, is “recognition that EN’s evidence base is insufficient.”The South East England Regional Assembly has also commissioned consultants to look into what alternative land is available. The report is due by the end of July.</p> <p>Currently, homes cannot be built within 5km of the SPA because EN claims residents using the open space of the heath would disturb several rare species. The dispute is holding up the construction of up to 40,000 homes and has led to job losses at several local building firms.</p><b> <p>NEXT KEY DATE: The HBF and DCLG-commissioned research will be made available in the autumn so that it can be incorporated into the examination of the south east England regional spatial strategy.</p></b>
