Steve Reed becomes housing secretary

Steve Reed is set to become new housing secretary, following Angela Rayner's departure earlier today (September 5).

Reed was previously environment secretary, also holding the post when Labour was in opposition from September 2023 to May 2024.

His other roles include shadow justice secretary and shadow secretary for communities and local government.

Reed has represented Streatham and Croydon North since Labour formed government in July 2024.

From 2010 to 2024, he was MP for Croydon North.

Angela Rayner, former deputy prime minister, housing secretary and deputy Labour leader, resigned today after failing to pay enough stamp duty on a property she bought in Hove, East Sussex.

Prime minister Keir Starmer is currently undertaking a cabinet reshuffle, with former foreign secretary David Lammy now appointed new deputy prime minister as well as justice secretary.
