Starmer pledges more homes on green belt land

<p>A Labour government would allow more homes on green belt land, as part of the party’s plans to unlock growth through housing, according to leader Keir Starmer.</p> <p>In an interview with <i>The Times</i>, Starmer said his party would hand more power to councils and residents to develop on the green belt to meet local housing need. </p><p>The government meanwhile, has proposed under its NPPF changes <span>that local planning authorities will not need to review and alter green belt boundaries, even if this </span><span>would be</span><span> the only way to meet need.</span></p> <p>At the same time, Starmer commented to the newspaper that a “discussion” on the subject could not be reduced to a “simple… <span>will you</span> or will you not build on the green belt”. <span></span></p> <p><span>He explained that “very often”, people’s objections to housebuilding on the green belt were relevant “because the control by landowners and developers mean that the houses are proposed in areas where it’s quite obvious that there’s going to be a local concern”. </span></p> <p><span>This “problem” would be solved by local areas determining where homes on the green belt were built, he said. “This is why it’s important for local areas to have the power to decide …
