Starmer highlights HBF report in criticism of planning policy

<p>Labour leader Keir Starmer has highlighted a report from the Home Builders Federation in criticism of the government’s approach to planning reform.</p> <p>At Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) yesterday (March 1), Starmer referenced research that HBF published earlier this week, showing that changes to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and interventions from Natural England could cause housing supply to drop to the lowest level since World War Two.</p> <p>In an exchange between Starmer and the prime minister Rishi Sunak, the Labour leader stated that if the PM was sincere about investing in the country’s future, he would begin with housing.</p> <p>Starmer commented that Sunak had justified abolishing housebuilding targets by saying this would lead to more homes.</p> <p><span>He added: “A few months later, the Home Builders Federation say that housebuilding is going to fall to its lowest level in 75 years. He [Sunak] can change course on this. He can bring back targets or he can duck that fight and let a generation down.”</span></p> <p><span>In response, the PM said the government had overseen “record high numbers of housebuilding” and first-time buyers.
