Repossession risk at highest rate for more than a decade

The number of homeowners at risk of repossession is at its highest point in the past 12 years, according to the Department of Constitutional Affairs. The figures show that banks and building societies started proceedings to repossess 29,991 homes between July and September, 55% up on the same period last year. The last time so many were threatened was in 1993, following the severe house price crash. The DCA has pointed to higher interest rate, rising utility bills, more expensive petrol and large credit card bills as contributing to the situation. While the figures are still said to be low overall, City analysts have warned that they represent a worrying trend. The areas most affected are Greater London, followed by the west midlands, Greater Manchester and west Yorkshire. (Independent, Guardian)
