Report calls for local approach to quality housing

<p><span>The industry should offer choice and diversity of housing, creating places that respond to their context, according to a report written in response to the government’s Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission.</span></p> <p><span>The authors of <i>Distinctively Local</i> – architects HTA Design, Pollard Thomas Edwards, PRP and Proctor &amp; Matthews - said the report reacts positively to the Commission as well as housing minister Kit Malthouse’s recent call to architects to help build “the homes the next generation deserves”, with the publication aiming to “inform and inspire” those planning, designing, delivering or hoping to live in new schemes. </span></p> <p><i><span>Distinctively Local </span></i><span>highlights the key aspects of design of new suburban and rural housing, offering guidance and case studies “that show how to create genuinely distinctive and popular places,” the group of architects explained.</span></p> <p><span>As well as context, choice and diversity, the report sets out other essential ingredients for building a distinctive sense of place and quality, including designing people-friendly streets and open spaces, and producing modern houses “which feel like home”.</span></p> <p><span>“The housing industry must focus on providing home buyers with greater choice and diversity, creating carefully considered neighbourhoods that are rooted in their local context,” the architects stated.</span><span></span></p> <p><span>Simon Bayliss, HTA …
