Report calls for action for more modular housing

<p><span>Places for People and the University of Cambridge have called upon the government and the housebuilding industry to work together to help create more homes using modular construction.</span></p><p><span>A </span><a href="https://placesforpeople.co.uk/news/publications">report</a><span>- </span><i>Deploying Modular Housing in the UK</i><span> – from the placemaking housebuilder and the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Housing and Planning Research, sets out a “joint vision” for speeding up the wider adoption of modular construction in the UK to help reach new homes targets. The authors say housebuilding rates are “just half” of the 300,000 that are needed annually – “insufficient to meet accumulated need”.</span></p><p><span>The publication makes a number of recommendations, including a plea for government support through grants and subsidies for housebuilders that use modular technologies, and via planning policy incentives.</span></p><p><span>The two organisations also want to see the creation of industry standards and warranties for modular that match those for traditional build. This, they said, would “provide certainty and confidence” for housebuilders as well as customers and for lenders “who are sometimes cautious of loaning on modular homes”. </span></p><p><span>Housebuilders should collect data and gather evidence “to create a strong evidence base of the benefits of offsite housing construction and MMC” to help build trust among customers and lenders, …
