Redrow calls for fresh approach to apprenticeships

<p>Redrow is calling on the government and industry to refresh their approach to <span>attracting people into</span> apprenticeships, as its latest research shows that more than a third of young people are less likely to choose a university education in response to the pandemic.</p> <p>Releasing its annual report on attitudes towards apprenticeships and careers in construction, the housebuilder said that its research - involving 2,000 parents and young people as well as more than 100 of its own apprentices - showed that 42% of 16 to 21-year-olds were now more likely to consider on-the-job learning such as an apprenticeship. This rose to 57% among young adults in London.</p> <p>Meanwhile, <span>36% said the pandemic had made them concerned about their job prospects. </span></p> <p><span>Redrow found that, with schools being closed for periods of time, the proportion of young people receiving information about apprenticeships at school had dropped to a four-year low - </span>57% in 2021 against 2018’s 63%. Sixty seven percent of Redrow’s apprentices said that schools did not promote apprenticeships in the same way as other educational options.</p> <p>The housebuilder’s report also suggested that gender stereotypes around construction still persisted, with 33% of female respondents having discussed construction careers at school …
