RDL pulls floor from handbook

Robust Details Ltd has decided to discontinue one of the robust detail constructions used by developers to comply with Part E of the Building Regulations. Lab testing of the generic floating screed floor design E-FC-3, which is contained in the RD handbook, was successful. But the system did not meet the highest level of acoustic performance demanded by RD’s rigorous on-site testing procedures, said RD chief executive Dave Baker. “E-FC-3 can be susceptible to workmanship error,”he explained. “We found that, on a number of sites, insufficient care and attention was being given at the edge treatment of the floor. We educated builders on the correct installation, but an unacceptable proportion of floors continued to deviate from the standards. So this detail can no longer be regarded as robust.” RDL has written to all customers, advising them to ensure installation procedures are carefully followed if they plan to continue to use RD E-FC-3. Alternatively, builders have the option of re-registering with another RD. The RD scheme has achieved 97% compliance rates since it began running when new Part E standards were introduced two years ago.
