Standards review proposes to drop Code

The Code for Sustainable Homes may be “wound down” in a proposal that the government has put forward as part of the consultation on the Housing Standards Review. DCLG said that it would “put in place transitional arrangements to ensure that contractual commitments under the Code can be properly covered”. <br><br>The lower levels of the Code’s energy requirements have been absorbed into Building Regulations. The consultation was published in August after two expert groups worked to find ways to streamline housing standards and Building Regulations. It also raised the possibility of the introduction of a minimum space standard. <br><br>John Slaughter, HBF’s director of external affairs who sat on the Housing Standards Review Group, said: “It’s not the right answer to impose minimum space standards on a constrained market. There is also the impact on land supply and affordability.” On the phasing out of the Code, Paul Hicks, sustainability and design manager at Velux, said: “Removing the Code could diminish the progress achieved to date”.
