Private new home registrations in the third quarter of 2024 rose 58% against Q3 2023, according to NHBC’s latest data, with the organisation noting some signs of increased activity on site and “cautious optimism”.
During Q3 2024, 19,879 new homes were registered in the private sector. The rental and affordable sector also saw an increase in new home registrations during the period, up 12% to 8,845, although NHBC noted that this improvement masked the challenging conditions for housing associations, with capital budgets channelled into the remediation and retrofit of existing stock.
Total registrations in the quarter rose 40% compared to Q3 2023 to 28,724 new homes. NHBC said this ran “level” with registrations in Q2 2024 (29,093).
Ten of 12 UK regions registered rises in the quarter, including the South East at +84%, the North West and Merseyside (+81%) and the North East (+78%).
Detached homes were the most registered house type during Q3 2024 at 10,167, up 80% against the previous year. Semi-detached home registrations climbed 62% to 9,373, while those for apartments fell 18% to 4,386 homes.
