Private new home applications double

Applications for private new homes in the UK soared 110% for the three months to the end of February 2010 against the same period last year, NHBC new housebuilding statistics show. Private sector applications rose to 16,669 from 7,931. Meanwhile, public sector applications were up 13%, from 6,606 to 7,436. Applications for all new homes between December 2009 to February 2010 were up 66% on last year’s comparable period. February annual figures showed a rise of 73%. NHBC commented that the housebuilding industry had “thawed” following the “big freeze”.<br> <br> It said: “The rate of recovery had dipped in January as extreme weather conditions impacted on registrations. But with Spring approaching, the private sector appears to be showing signs of recovery.” Chief executive Imtiaz Farookhi said: “The average daily home sales are increasing when compared with this time last year, which given the difficulties surrounding mortgage availability is a positive statement of intent.”<br>
