Poison gas risk in new build properties

Last month the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) warned builders, developers and home owners of the risk of possible gas poisoning from flues for gas boilers. The warning comes after a home owner died in a new Barratt Homes apartment in February from gas flue poisoning. Housebuilders now must carry out extensive checks on new and second-hand properties to check that gas flues are properly installed. In some cases, remedial work will be required. For those housebuilders with a number of properties to check, the HSE has advised that a sample method may be used as assessment. Properties in the process of being sold or not fully built may also need work to ensure that the gas flue systems are safe. <br><br>Houses on the drawing board may have to be redesigned. Under CORGI technical standards published in June 2007, there must be access to check the route of the flue through ceilings and into roofs. This is key to the assessment of properties for gas flue poisoning risk.
