Planning gain supplement (PGS)

<p>Reports that the government plans to scrap the proposed planning gain supplement (PGS) have been rubbished. Some had claimed that in a meeting between financial secretary to the Treasury, John Healey, housing minister Yvette Cooper and chairman of the Milton Keynes South Midlands Partnership John Walker, a decision was taken to drop the PGS – a tax on the uplift in land value gained from a planning consent – in favour of a “roof tax” levy on completed schemes, like that in place in Milton Keynes. But the government has dismissed the reports as “absolute nonsense.”</p> <p>Consultation on the PGS is continuing, along with wider discussions about the best way to solve the problem of funding the infrastructure needed to support the government’s housing growth plans.</p><b> <p>NEXT KEY DATE: Government plans to introduce the PGS in 2008. An announcement is expected along with the pre-Budget report in November or December</p></b>
