Places for People has partnered with Women into Construction to encourage more women into the business.
The social enterprise, which delivers multi-tenure homes, said the partnership would help increase and diversify its workforce, supporting its plan to deliver more than 5,000 new homes per year by 2028.
With its shift towards self-building 70% of its new homes, Places for People explained that it would need to recruit many more people in hands-on construction roles. It anticipates women playing a “significant role” in helping fill these positions.
The business pointed out that 33% of employees in its development arm were female, double the construction industry average. It noted that across the UK, less than 2% of women worked in trade roles on site.
Citing data from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), it said that the construction industry needed an additional 225,000 workers by 2027.
Working closely with Women into Construction, Places for People will identify regions where there is an upcoming need for additional staff, holding roadshows to recruit potential female candidates in the identified areas. It will also offer professional skills training.
