ODPM publishes new code for sustainable homes

The ODPM has today published its long-awaited code for sustainable homes – previously referred to as the code for sustainable buildings (CSB). The code introduces more stringent environmental standards than existing Building Regulations and will set set star ratings for home buyers, based on the energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of homes. Developments will need to be carbon neutral to achieve the highest five-star rating. Altough the code will not be compulsory to begin with, all homes on government-owned land will be required to comply local authorities will be encouraged to promote the use of the code on public sector land and strategic sites. Housing and planning minister Yvette Cooper announced the publication of the CSH today. She said: “This shows that we can improve environmental protection and build new homes at the same time. By making more efficient use of water and materials and improving the environmental protections in the planning system we will ensure that the new homes we need are built in a more sustainable way.”
