Newplan seeks to boost private rented sector

Local authorities should consider waiving affordable housing requirements on developments of privately rented homes to boost investment and building in the sector. <br> <br> This is one of a series of recommendations contained in a report on the private rented sector by Sir Adrian Montague commissioned under the government's Housing Strategy.<br> <br> The report highlights the "real potential" for investment in large scale development of homes built for private rent by professional organisations and finds that a combination of recent tax changes and wider market conditions have cleared the way for this sector to grow. <br> <br> Other recommendations include:<br> <br> The government should provide targeted incentives to encourage build-to-let schemes such as sharing development risk in the short term Setting up a build-to-let task force to support investment from the private sector and to develop voluntary standards for landlords Allocating redundant public sector land and buildings being released for housebuilding to build to-let development <br> HBF's executive chairman Stewart Baseley said that the report made some sensible recommendations.
