New shadow housing minister appointed

<p><span>Lucy Powell has become the new shadow housing secretary in Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s post-election cabinet reshuffle.</span><span></span></p> <p><span>Powell, MP for Manchester Central since 2012, now has the housing brief, taking over from Thangam Debbonaire who has been appointed shadow leader of the House of Commons.</span></p> <p><span>From April 2020 until the latest reshuffle, Powell was shadow business minister. During her parliamentary career she has also been shadow education secretary, shadow minister for the cabinet office and shadow education minister.</span></p> <p><span>Powell has also served on the Education Committee and Transport Committee.</span></p> <p><span>The MP tweeted: “</span><span>Really pleased to become the shadow housing secretary - some really big issues to tackle from cladding, housing crisis, private rented sector, homelessness and providing decent housing for all, to name a few.</span>”</p> <p><span>Former housing secretary John Healey remains as shadow defence secretary and Jim McMahon shadow transport secretary. Steve Reed also remains in his post as shadow Communities and Local Government secretary.</span></p>
