New PPG3 revisions will worsen housing crisis, says industry

Draft revisions to PPG3, due to be published in October, are set to empower local authorities to control the size, type and mix of all housing in development proposals, a move that housebuilders say will worsen the housing crisis. HBF head of communications Pierre Williams said: "We are very concerned that some local authorities opposed to development will use this route to dictate policy. The government talks about devices to solve the housing crisis but these policies aren't tackling undersupply. Perhaps they should realise that people know their own minds." Housebuilders will be keen to convince the ODPM to withdraw this idea completely and reconsult or alternatively amend the wording to discourage local authorities from refusing applications merely because they dislike the housing mix. News of the PPG3 revisions comes hot on the heels of a warning by George Wimpey chief executive Peter Johnson that increased involvement by the government and other public sector bodies in the housebuilding industry will worsen the housing shortage.
