New initiatives aim to boost housing design

<b></b> Two new initiatives have been launched to drive forward good housing design, one by the government and one by industry. <br>The HBF, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and the Civic Trust have announced a three year initiative on new homes design called <i>Building for Life</i>, while the government has published a new design guide called Better Places to Live. <p></p><p>The <i>Building for Life</i> initiative, led by Sir Terry Farrell, will gather examples of design excellence and identify barriers to good design.</p><p>&amp;"Well designed housing should not be the preserve of the few,&amp;" said Sir Terry. &amp;"We need to create high quality products that are within the reach of every house buyer and tenant.&amp;"</p><p>A team of industry experts will collate examples of good practice and share these examples with the industry.</p><p>HBF president Geoff Ball said the issue of design is one of the most important facing housebuilders. &amp;"People will increasingly not accept development unless it is well designed. People value good design and are happy to pay for it so there are good commercial reasons as well as social and environmental reasons for improving design.&amp;"</p><p>The DTLR's new guide has also been launched with CABE.
