The New Homes Accelerator has sped up the delivery of nearly 100,000 new homes across England, according to the government, with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) announcing six new “priority” large sites set to also benefit from the initiative.
In August 2024, MHCLG launched the New Homes Accelerator to tackle barriers to development on large consented sites by, it said, leveraging resource and expertise available to government and Homes England.
Since its inception a year ago, the initiative has, according to MHCLG, accelerated the delivery of 36,000 new homes “that were not building out as fast as they should have”. This was through interventions including providing additional planning capacity and cutting regulatory tape.
The Accelerator’s “expert team” has also driven forward planning proposals for another 63,000 homes “through close engagement with arms-length bodies and other government departments, helping to unlock growth”.
The six new sites the New Homes Accelerator will aid are:
- Wisley Airfield in Guildford
- At Hampden Fields in Aylesbury
- At Comeytrowe Garden Community, also known as Orchard Grove, in Somerset
- At North Leigh Park in Wigan
- At Billet Road in Redbridge, London
- At High Road West in Haringey, London.
