New government guide calls for design to reduce crime

Planning minister Keith Hill and crime prevention minister Hazel Blears have teamed up for the launch of a new guide for planners on reducing crime through urban design. Hill said: “The guidance sets out how we expect local planners, architects and developers to play their part in planning out crime. Lots of small things can make really big differences, whether it’s a new CCTV system, better lit streets and stairways or the enclosure of courtyards to make play areas for kids.” Safer Places: The Planning System and Crime Prevention is available at www.odpm.gov.uk
