Labour to “bulldoze through” barriers to housebuilding - Starmer

<p>Labour will “bulldoze through” the country’s restricted planning system that is holding back housebuilding, so people can realise the dream of home ownership, leader Keir Starmer said today (October 10).</p> <p>Giving his key speech at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, Starmer set out his “new plan to get Britain building”. This included a new towns programme as trailed earlier in the day. Starmer said: “We’ll get shovels in the ground, cranes in the sky and build the next generation of Labour new towns.”</p> <p>Starmer said people’s aspirations were being blighted by the difficulties of achieving home ownership. This was “a future hidden by our restricted planning system. We must bulldoze through it.”</p> <p>The dream of home ownership had become a distant dream for many, Starmer stated. He referenced his <span>childhood </span>home – a “pebble dashed semi” which was “everything to our family. It gave us stability through the cost-of-living crisis in the ‘70s.” It was also a “springboard” for Starmer’s own life.</p> <p>To make the goal of home ownership harder for people would be “a disaster for our economy,” he said.</p> <p>Labour’s housebuilding plan would therefore “fight the blockers”, with “no more landbankers sitting on brownfield land”.
