Labour to bring “once in a generation” housing reforms

<p>Labour will introduce “once in a generation” reforms for housing, energy and transport, according to shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves.</p> <p>Speaking at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool today (October 9), Reeves said that if in power, her party would “take on our antiquated planning system” to deliver more homes, also expanding local planning authority capacity. </p> <p><span>The shadow chancellor stated: “If the Tories won’t build, if the Tories can’t build, then we will ... Labour stands with the builders not the blockers.”</span></p> <p><span>Labour also plans to raise stamp duty for those buying UK homes from abroad to support home building and improve the rate of UK home ownership. </span></p><p><span>On home ownership – which the party has pledged to increase to 70% – Reeves said: “That dream [of owning a home] is far too remote for far too many people. Many homes are being bought by overseas buyers, driving up prices.”</span></p> <p><span>The stamp duty measure would show Labour was “the party of home ownership,” the shadow chancellor indicated.</span></p> <p><span>Labour also intends to open up new grid connections to competitive tendering as “developers are forced to wait up to 15 years to connect”. </span></p> <p><span>Reeves’ speech follows Labour leader Keir Starmer stating …
