Johnson pledges "thousands of wonderful London homes"

The London mayor Boris Johnson has said that he wants to see "tens of thousands of wonderful new homes" being built in the capital each year over the next four years if he remains as mayor.<br> <br> Addressing a cross-industry audience last month (April) the mayor confirmed his commitment to housing in London, promising to create 55,000 more affordable homes by 2015, having reached his target of 50,000. He said that all of London's homes should be built to last "hundreds of years" and be "architecturally beautiful".<br> <br> The mayor also pledged to instigate meetings with institutional investors in a bid to inject funds into the housing market. "These investors are sitting on reserves of cash that would be of great benefit to the people of this city and to housebuilding," he said.<br> <br> Johnson's main rival for London mayor, Ken Livingstone, has pledged to create a not-for-profit lettings agency to help those who he says will be in the private rented sector "for a very long time".
