The John Lewis Partnership (JLP) has gained approval to deliver 353 rental homes on its Waitrose site in Bromley, Kent.
The London Borough of Bromley gave a resolution to grant consent for the application, which also includes a rebuilt Waitrose store, after agreeing with a recommendation from its planning officers.
John Lewis said the plans had received 147 letters of support from local residents, outnumbering those who had objected.
JLP is delivering the scheme in joint venture (jv) with investment company Abrdn, with JLP developing, owning and manging the energy efficient Build to Rent homes.
The application also comprises new public green spaces, a café and amenity spaces for schools and local community groups to use. Cycle and pedestrian links will link to Bromley high street and surrounding areas.
The development, according to JLP, is set to boost the local economy by an estimated £70 million through the extra council tax generated and local spend over the first ten years of the homes’ occupation.
The one to three bedroom homes, which will be JLP branded, will include “as much affordable housing as is commercially viable” and with long-term tenancy options.
