Ikea plans to sell flatpack homes

An Anglo-Swedish project could see homes sold over the counter at furnishing superstore Ikea as soon as this spring. Most of the homes, named BoKloks, are expected to come in ready assembled clusters of six, though there is a flatpack option, with the first sites likely to be on the fringes of London, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. The homes will be valued at around £70,000. The initiative brings together the Hyde housing association, Paramount Homes and Ikea’s Scandinavian partner Skanska. It is the biggest commercial response yet to deputy prime minister John Prescott’s challenge to housebuilders to come up with a cut price home for first time buyers. The house cuts out costly but “unnecessary” details and will be available to people on incomes from £15,000.
