Michael Gove, secretary of state of levelling up, housing and communities, was sacked last night by prime minister Boris Johnson.
Earlier in a remarkable day that saw the resignation of more than 40 members of government, it was reported that Gove had told the prime minister that it was time to stand down. Johnson resisted the call and instead removed Gove.
Several other ministers at DLUHC resigned yesterday including housing minister Stuart Andrew, levelling up minister Neil O’Brien and equalities minister Kemi Badenoch.
During Gove’s tenure as housing secretary he dumped proposed planning reforms and pushed forward the levelling up and regeneration bill. This year he has challenged the housebuilding sector to find solutions to the building safety crisis, clashing openly with the industry and branding it “a cartel”.
