Housing Corporation plans “unrealistic”

Circle 33 chief executive Donald Hoodless has dubbed the chief executive of the Housing Corporation, Jon Rouse, “unrealistic” in his call for high quality, cheap housing, reports Chris Windle. <p></p><p>Hoodless stressed that while the government was pushing plans to build £60,000 homes, in his experience, either quality or cost has to come first. “I hope that quality is more important,” he said, “though experience tells you that public bodies act on cost.” </p><p>Speaking at the John Laing Partnership conference MMC – Does it deliver?, Rouse said that “we want a higher quality and quantity” of housing and increased cost effectiveness. He urged housebuilders to meet the amount the Housing Corporation had to invest by getting involved in projects such as the government’s £60,000 house. “We have to stop experimenting with modern methods of construction (MMC),” he said. “The providers have to decide what products to use to get volume and flow.” He also warned housebuilders not to “experiment with MMC on the poor.” </p><p>Rouse argued that housebuilding should be a design-led process focusing on the end product, using MMC as a means of creating homes that are durable, flexible and cost effective.
