High density not suitable for families

<table><tbody><tr><td><table> <tbody><tr><td> </td></tr><tr><td><i> St George’s award-winning Battersea Reach in London: high density and high amenity – but good for families?<br/></i></td></tr></tbody></table>A new study by the London School of Economics (LSE) has found that the capital’s residents would be happy to sacrifice living space for a high level of amenity. But the report did not provide a full endorsement for high density communities: it concludes that apartments are primarily suited to young people, likely to seek more living space when they have families.<br/><br/>While the government is encouraging high densities, HBF head of communications Pierre Williams stressed the need for family houses. “We must provide homes people want, not what the government thinks they ought to have. While the industry supports the density drive, a lack of family housing has made prices rocket; those aspiring to start familes must wonder if they can ever afford to.”</td></tr></tbody></table><br/>
