High density housing comes under attack

Government policy could stifle the aspirations of the county’s homebuyers according to a new report. Research commissioned by the HBF, by Professor Dave King, head of the population and housing research group at Anglia Polytechnic University, has found that the government policy orientated towards building smaller properties for smaller households is misguided since smaller households accounted for 60% of growth in the number of dwellings with seven or more rooms between 1981 and 2001. The government’s drive towards higher density housing was further undermined by CABE research, conducted by MORI, which shows that over half the population want to live in a detached house. The overwhelming majority also want to live in a suburban location.
