HBF warns of government's “anti-development” stance on levy

<p><span>The government’s “increasingly anti-development and anti-business policy regime” holds “serious implications” for home ownership, investment and jobs, according to the Home Builders Federation.</span><span></span></p> <p><span>Commenting on the launch of the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ consultation on its controversial £3 billion Building Safety Levy, which housebuilders are set to pay into for the remediation of “orphaned buildings” for fire safety purposes, HBF said UK housebuilders were committed to playing their part to remove the burden of </span><span>paying for</span><span> fixing buildings from leaseholders.</span><span></span></p> <p>Housebuilders were, HBF stated, “remediating the buildings they built whilst paying another £2.5 billion to fund work on over 18m buildings built by foreign companies and other parties”.</p> <p>It added: “Years after the emergence of issues with building products, government has failed to pursue product manufacturers with ministers acknowledging that UK housebuilders are easier to tax and threaten.”</p> <p><span>The Building Safety Levy, which is set to collect an estimated £3 billion over the next decade, has been extended from its original form as announced in February 2021 to cover all residential buildings.
