<p>The housebuilding industry has labelled today's RIBA report into the size of new homes as "a disappointing missed opportunity" and accused RIBA of looking at housing statistics "in a vacuum".</p> <p>Today's report - The Case for Space - says the average new three bedroom home is around 8% smaller than the basic recommended minimum size, and labels new homes as "shameful shoe boxes". It accuses the industry of a lack of transparency on the size of new homes and says RIBA is setting up a new inquiry into homes under Sir John Banham.</p> <p>But the Home Builders Federation says that the report fails to look at the reasons behind the size of new homes, ignores land supply, does not address viability nor the planning system. HBF stressed that customer satisfaction ratings are high for new homes and that housebuilders can only build homes that customers want and afford.</p> <p>HBF executive chairman Stewart Baseley said: "This report is a disappointing missed opportunity.
