Government to do 'much more' to boost housebuilding

The government is to announce further housing measures this month to boost economic growth, according to the chancellor George Osborne.<br> <br> During his speech at the Lord Mayor's dinner at London's Mansion House in June, Osborne said that the government would build upon the support given to the housebuilding industry to bolster the private sector.<br> <br> "Credit is not the only area where we can use the global confidence in our balance sheet to boost private sector growth," he stated. "We are already taking action to support new housebuilding and infrastructure investment through government guarantees. In the next month we will set out how we can do much more."<br> <br> Business secretary Vince Cable also made housebuilding a focus in his speech to the Centreforum Think Tank the following week, stating that government guarantees could help make rapid progress in housing. "There is scope here to both create demand and solve a pressing supply need."<br> <br> HBF's executive chairman Stewart Baseley also wrote a paper and supporting letter to the prime minister in June, which put forward housing measures to stimulate economic growth.
