Government set to publish “radical” planning system reforms

<p><span>The government is set to publish its “radical and necessary” reforms to the English planning system this week, according to the housing secretary Robert Jenrick.</span></p> <p><span>Outlining some of the plans, Jenrick wrote in the<i> Sunday Telegraph</i> that in order to introduce a “simpler, faster, people-focused system to deliver the homes and places we need,” land would be designated under one of three categories: for growth, renewal or protection.</span></p> <p><span>For land labelled for growth, development would be automatically allowed, Jenrick wrote. Meanwhile, areas designated for renewal will see a “permission in principle" approach, according to Jenrick. </span></p> <p><span>And protected land will include the green belt and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. </span></p> <p><span>Jenrick wrote that that under current rules, it took around five years for a standard housing scheme to pass through the planning system.</span></p> <p><span>“This is why the prime minister has been clear that we need an ambitious response that matches the scale of the challenge in front of us. A once in a generation reform that lays the foundations for a better future.”</span></p> <p><span>“So this week I am bringing forward radical and necessary reforms to our planning system to get Britain building and drive our economic recovery,” he said.</span></p> …
