Government launches initiative for north England housing

The government has announced a package of measures aimed at creating new homes, jobs and sustainable communities in the north of England. Making It Happen - The Northern Way is intended to reduce disparities between the north and south. It includes the deputy prime minister John Prescott’s plans to work closely with regional development agencies and regional planning bodies to exploit the economic and transport links of the major northern cities and surrounding areas. The government is to develop the concept of a new dedicated Northern Growth Corridor to help bring in new investment and boost the north as an economic force in Europe. Measures include allocating £69 million over two years to revive the housing market in Newcastle Gateshead and £86 million over two years to revive the housing market in Merseyside.
