Government boosts infrastructure funding

The Chancellor's Comprehensive Spending Review is good news for developers, with the announcement of an extra £200 million to provide for much-needed infastructure for the four Communities Plan growth areas. Along with the welcome boost to the Community Infrastructure Fund, the site preparation budget for Milton Keynes, Stanstead, Ashford and the Thames Gateway corridor has also been doubled to £130 million plus, in the government's detemined drive to deliver 200,000 extra homes in London and the south east by 2016. The north will also benefit from a planned overall annual 4.1% increase in spending on housing and regeneration. "HBF welcomes the government’s commitment to turn its vision of more housing in sustainable communities into a reality," said House Builders Federation spokesman Pierre Williams. "We appreciate government’s realisation that this will require substantial public investment in the transport, economic and social infrastructure to make designated housing growth areas suitable and viable for new homes."
