Government blamed for family home shortage

<p>Developers have joined a group of MPs in blaming the undersupply of family housing on government density targets. The Commons all party housing, planning, local government and the regions select committee, which is examining the work of the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and its predecessor, said local planners needed to have the flexibility to provide a variety of home types. “To create sustainable areas, a range of unit sizes which caters for a range of needs is required. The recent increase in two bedroom flats in town and city centres needs to be balanced by an increase in family housing.”</p> <p>A DCLG spokesperson said: “High density doesn’t necessarily mean two bedroom flats. There are plenty of examples that show you can have family housing and homes with gardens.”He added: “Planning guidelines already say that local authorities should have a mix of housing types.”</p> <p>But Linden chief executive Philip Davies said that planning policy was too prescriptive. “Family homes are becoming gold dust as they fail to meet the criteria of local planning authorities who are dictated to by central government policy.
