Government add £235m to sustainable communities funding

The government is to add £235 million to its growth area funding pot. Over the two years from 2006 to 2008 the money will be made available to support sustainable communities across three areas: Milton Keynes South Midlands, Ashford and the London-Stansted-Cambridge-Peterborough corridor. This is in addition to the £164 million that was included in the Sustainable Communities Plan in 2003. Minister for regeneration and regional development Jeff Rooker said: “The first £164 million enabled partners to plan for and start implementation to unlock housing in the newer growth areas and this included a number of small local schemes. This time, we expect partners to come forward with proposals for more large scale and innovative schemes based on their strategic business plans, including the infrastructure necessary for the creation of truly sustainable communities.”
