Gove returns as housing secretary

Michael Gove has returned to the Cabinet as housing secretary in prime minister Rishi Sunak's new government. He has been reappointed as secretary of state at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

Gove was sacked from the job in July after clashing with then then prime minister Boris Johnson. In the first half of the year he had engaged intently with the housebuilding industry on the building safety issue, steering the Building Safety Bill through parliament and working towards the building safety pledge.

Grant Shapps is the new business secretary, replacing Jacob Rees-Mogg, and Therese Coffey is environment secretary. Jeremy Hunt remains chancellor.
