First bidders chosen for Design for Manufacture sites

Barratt, George Wimpey and Crest Nicholson have been selected to build on the first four sites released by English Partnerships (EP) as part of deputy prime minister John Prescott’s Design for Manufacture competition. Barratt has been chosen to develop two of the sites. The company will build 151 homes in Allerton Bywater, West Yorkshire and 165 in Upton, Northampton. Wimpey will build 145 homes in Oxley Park, Milton Keynes and Crest has been chosen to build 68 homes in Renny Lodge in Newport Pagnell in Bedfordshire. The competition rules state that 30% of the homes must be built for £60,000 or less. Director of corporate strategy at EP Trevor Beattie said: “All of the submissions we received at this stage have shown massive improvements on their initial proposals and deserve to congratulated. These homes are going to be highly desirable.” Barratt chief executive David Pretty said: “The government is asking the industry for homes, more regeneration, more social housing, more skills training and more innovation - and we at Barratt are delivering on every one of these fronts.” Work on the homes will begin next spring and the first homes are due to be available by next summer.
